Hands-on NixOS for Beginners Workshop

Heard about Nix or NixOS but never taken the chance to try it? We will help you get started with this hands-on workshop!


This workshop will introduce the concepts of NixOS to beginners. Participants will be guided through the installation of NixOS in a virtual machine—local or remote—configuring the basics, setting up additional services from the Nix Packages collection, and managing programs with home-manager. By the end of the workshop, attendees will have a fully functional NixOS environment and the foundational knowledge to use it in other contexts.

Topics covered:

  • Fresh installation and converting an existing Linux system
  • Configuring services
  • Running containers: OCI (Docker) and nixos-containers
  • "Dotfiles" management with home-manager

Requirements

  • Basic experience with running Linux inside virtual machines.
  • A setup to run virtual machines with at least 4GB of RAM:
  • A setup to run virtual machines (VirtualBox, Qemu, ... )
  • Or an account on a cloud platform with resources available (Hetzner, OVH, DigitalOcean, Big Tech, ...)
